Beach weddings are a joy to photograph, especially if it is a luxury resort with a beautiful beach front. Add some details like flower petals on the sand, elegantly landscaped trails, a beautiful turquoise ocean water as a backdrop, and you've got a recipe for a very photogenic wedding!
the ideal type of outdoor light for a beach wedding is a soft, milky light. This ensures that no harsh shadows on the faces of people you photograph. If the harsh sunlight is unavoidable, the goal of the sun behind the person you are shooting. Otherwise you will be taking photos of people squinting! If possible, place the main ceremony in the shaded area, which will do wonders for the comfort of guests, especially in humid tropical climates. If you are lucky enough to get the beach with turquoise blue water, use it to your advantage. Feature ocean visible even in the photographs of people who will be an excellent way to provide the context for the images.
When night falls, the challenge will be to properly light reception without resorting to the use of direct flash. Putting off camera flash on lightstands strategically placed throughout the area will greatly help to increase the light level. These lights will sometimes act as a key light, as well as provide some form of edge lighting. If the location already has some lamp posts, and use them as part of its lighting.
All of these light sources combined would still not be able to give you enough light in the reception outdoors at night, since there is no surface from which are deducted from a typical reception for the beach. After the canopy would greatly help to provide a bounce area, resulting in a softer light on the faces of the people, not to mention a good way to stave off the light drizzle.
Having done all that can increase light levels, would still need a body like a high-end Nikon D3S capable of shooting at high ISO settings, without producing too much noise DSLR. Fast lenses (f2.8 minimum), along with Vibration Reduction (VR) as the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G AF-S VR II will greatly help you to shoot at the optimum ISO settings.
