We bought a house in a luxury suburb of the city that was very traditional on the outside. It was stucco with rock around the front door and the beautiful windows trimmed in white. Inside was a lot of fancy trim, also painted in white with multi-mantels, crown molding and wide baseboards and a traditional fireplace.
But ...
In this very traditional feeling someone had stuck a very difficult modern kitchen with melamine cabinets with oak trim.
When we bought the house that was for sale for years!
This kitchen is literally a house made unmarketable.
Why?
Customers who looked at home and liked it from the outside were very disappointed when they saw the kitchen ... and do not buy.
is that the cabinets are not nice. They are beautifully made and obviously not cheap.
But they do not go with the house style, and customers are expecting.
And you know what else?
kitchens usually cost lots of $ $ $ for repairs.
Well I do not want to fix it, but it was 10 minutes of my husband's job, so we bought it.
Then I had a cabinet maker that I lined the doors from MDF, painted them cream ... not white ... and generally the kitchen looks like something you might find in an old-style Queen Anne home.
I also had to repaint all the white trim.
What hurts!
But guess what else?
To warm up the whole house, and it was easier on the eyes.
In addition, we completed all sides, and ends at the island and give the kitchen cabinets in a custom layout (the total cost for all of about $ 1,200 ).
When we finished we put the house on the market, advertising in local newspapers.
1 pair that looked at it bought it, and we moved into our mountain cabin. If we spent $ 30,000 to $ 50,000 that many TV shows say it, we would still have sold our home, but we would probably just back up maybe half that if we were lucky. It's $ 15,000 to $ 25,000 LOSS! Do not make that mistake. If something like a key to selling a kitchen needs to be updated, do it wisely. Do not throw money at that deep dark hole home remodel. We hope to find this treasure of a day and retire zillionaires to lose all the money spent on home remodeling, and even financed more than 30 years.
